Does a Bitcoin node hold my bitcoin?

Short answerNo. A node keeps its own copy of the bitcoin history and checks every payment against the rules. Your keys stay in your wallet or on a signer like a SeedSigner.

Steps

  1. Run the node at home, for example the Bitcoin Node app on Umbrel.
  2. Keep your keys on a signer that never goes online.
  3. Point your wallet, like Sparrow, at your own node.
  4. Now your wallet asks your node about your addresses, not a stranger’s server.

FAQ

So what does the node actually do?
It downloads and checks every block and transaction itself. Nobody can lie to you about your balance or about which payments are valid.
Can a node hold keys at all?
Bitcoin Core, the software inside most nodes, has an optional built-in wallet. In a node plus signer setup you don’t use it, so the node holds no keys.
If my node breaks, is my bitcoin gone?
No. Your bitcoin is on the blockchain and your seed words control it. Restore the seed on any wallet, or rebuild the node.
