# Does a Bitcoin node hold my bitcoin?

> No. A node keeps its own copy of the bitcoin history and checks every payment against the rules. Your keys stay in your wallet or on a signer like a SeedSigner.

- Checked against Umbrel’s Bitcoin Node app (https://github.com/getumbrel/umbrel-apps/blob/master/bitcoin/umbrel-app.yml), bitcoin.org (https://bitcoin.org/en/full-node) on 19 October 2026

## Steps

1. Run the node at home, for example the Bitcoin Node app on Umbrel.
2. Keep your keys on a signer that never goes online.
3. Point your wallet, like Sparrow, at your own node.
4. Now your wallet asks your node about your addresses, not a stranger’s server.

## FAQ

**So what does the node actually do?**
It downloads and checks every block and transaction itself. Nobody can lie to you about your balance or about which payments are valid.

**Can a node hold keys at all?**
Bitcoin Core, the software inside most nodes, has an optional built-in wallet. In a node plus signer setup you don’t use it, so the node holds no keys.

**If my node breaks, is my bitcoin gone?**
No. Your bitcoin is on the blockchain and your seed words control it. Restore the seed on any wallet, or rebuild the node.
