Run a Lightning node with Umbrel

Lightning sends small payments in seconds for tiny fees. Running your own node means nobody else holds those coins. It takes care, so start small.

What you need3 items
  • A synced Umbrel Bitcoin nodeFinish the node guide first. The sync must be complete.
  • Pencil and paperFor a new set of 24 words, just for this node.
  • A small amount of bitcoinSpending money only. An amount you could afford to lose.
Step 1 of 10
Step 1

Read this first

Lightning is a second layer on top of bitcoin. You lock some bitcoin into channels with other nodes. Payments then move inside those channels, fast and cheap.

  • Your Lightning keys live on an internet-connected computer. That is a hot wallet. Keep only spending money there.
  • Opening and closing channels costs normal bitcoin fees.
  • Your node should stay online. Long downtime adds risk.

Just want to pay with Lightning? A simple phone wallet is easier. Run your own node when you want full control.

Step 2

Install the Lightning Node app

  1. In Umbrel, open the App Store. Find Lightning Node and click Install.
  2. Open it and choose to create a new node.

Lightning Node Umbrel’s app runs LND, a widely used Lightning program.

Step 3

Write down the 24 words

  1. The app shows 24 words. Write them on paper, numbered 1 to 24.
  2. Label the paper “Lightning node”. Store it apart from your cold-storage seed.
  3. Confirm the words when the app asks.

These are not normal seed words. LND uses its own format. They won’t work in a SeedSigner or Sparrow. Never mix them up with your cold-storage seed.

Step 4

Understand your backups

To recover Lightning funds you need two things: the 24 words and a channel backup.

  1. The app keeps an automatic, encrypted channel backup for you.
  2. You can also download the backup file in the app after you open each channel. Keep a copy off the node.
  3. In a recovery, you enter the 24 words and the backup. Your channels get closed and the funds come back as normal bitcoin.

A recovery doesn’t reopen channels. It closes them. Some closes can take days to settle.

Step 5

Add funds to the node

  1. In the app, choose Deposit. It shows a bitcoin address.
  2. Send a small amount from your wallet.
  3. Wait for it to confirm. Usually 10–60 minutes.
Step 6

Open your first channel

  1. Pick a well-connected, reliable node to connect to. Public explorers such as amboss.space and 1ml.com show size and uptime.
  2. Copy its node address. It looks like a long code, then @, then an address and port.
  3. In the app, choose Open channel. Paste the address, set the amount and the fee.
  4. Wait for a few confirmations. The channel then shows as active.

Channel A shared pot of bitcoin between you and one other node. Payments shift the balance inside it.

Some nodes only accept channels above a minimum size. The app tells you if yours is too small.

Step 7

Know why you can send, not receive

A new channel starts with all funds on your side. You can send right away, but you can’t receive yet.

  1. Your receive room grows as you spend.
  2. Another way is a channel opened to you by someone else.
  3. Buying “inbound liquidity” is possible too. That is an advanced topic.
Step 8

Test with tiny payments

  1. Pay a small invoice. For example, to a friend or a phone wallet you own.
  2. Then receive a small amount back.
  3. Check both show up in the app.
Step 9

Connect a phone wallet (optional)

  1. In the Lightning Node app, look for Connect wallet.
  2. Pick a mobile wallet that supports LND nodes. The app shows a QR code with the connection details.
  3. Scan it from the phone wallet. Use the Tor option when you are away from home.

That QR is a key. It gives control of your node’s funds. Never share it or screenshot it.

Step 10

Living with your node

  1. Keep the node online and updated.
  2. Close channels you no longer use. A normal close settles fast.
  3. A force close happens when the other side is offline. Your funds return after a waiting period, often up to two weeks.
  4. Keep only what you are happy to spend from a hot wallet.
