Short answer: A virtual prepaid Visa you top up with bitcoin or Lightning. Email, not ID. Start small.

Freedomia is a virtual prepaid Visa card. You top it up with bitcoin, including Lightning, and spend it online or by tapping your Android phone. It asks for an email, not your ID. This guide shows how to start small and what to watch out for.

What you need4 items
  • An email addressBest is one you use only for this. A privacy-friendly email service is a good choice.
  • A Lightning wallet with a little bitcoinEnough for the yearly plan (60 USD) plus a small first top-up.
  • A password managerFor a long, unique password.
  • Optional: an Android phone with Google WalletOnly if you want to tap to pay in shops.
Step 1 of 10
Step 01/ 10

Is it for you?

Good for:

  • Paying online and for subscriptions without handing over your ID.
  • Tapping to pay in shops with Google Wallet on Android.
  • Spending small amounts of bitcoin in everyday life.

Not for:

  • Saving. Your balance sits with a company, in US dollars. It earns nothing.
  • iPhone tap to pay. Apple Pay is not supported.
  • Getting money back out. You can only spend the balance, not send it back.

This is not self-custody. Once you top up, a company and its payment partners hold the money. They can freeze it, change rules or shut down. Only put in what you plan to spend soon.

Prepaid card A card you load first and then spend. No credit, no bank account.

Step 02/ 10

Costs and limits

You pay for the card once a year. The site lists three plans. Each card needs its own plan.

  • Founder: 60 USD per year (shown as 5 USD a month). This is the only plan you can buy today. Limits: 5,000 USD a month, 60,000 USD a year.
  • HODL: 119.88 USD per year (shown as 9.99 USD a month). Marked “Soon”, not available yet. Same limits as Founder.
  • MOON: 215.88 USD per year (shown as 17.99 USD a month). Marked “Soon”, not available yet. Limits: 10,000 USD a month, 120,000 USD a year.

Freedomia says Founder members keep 60 USD a year when they renew, though it may be raised for inflation. The Founder plan will close at some point. When it does, new members pay the higher plans.

Other costs:

  • Top-up fee: 1.3% on every plan. Lightning adds about 0.25–0.5% on top.
  • Spending in other currencies: 2.5% exchange fee. The balance is in US dollars.
  • Cash machines: often around 6% in total, sometimes more. Only machines with tap (contactless) work.
  • Not renewing: the card is frozen when the plan ends.

Small example: top up 100 USD worth of bitcoin and 1.30 USD goes to the top-up fee. Over Lightning, add about 0.25–0.50 USD, so about 1.55–1.80 USD in total. For 50 USD, it is about 0.78–0.90 USD.

Prices and plans can change. Check the plans on freedomia.io before you pay. We last checked on October 11, 2026.

Step 03/ 10

Where it works

  • Anywhere Visa is accepted, online and in shops. Some shops still say no.
  • The card is issued in Hong Kong. Some shops, often US ones, reject such cards.
  • It can’t be used in Belarus, Cuba, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, or in Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

Your local rules still apply. In many countries, spending bitcoin counts as selling it for tax. Check what applies to you.

Step 04/ 10

Get ready

  1. Pick the email you will use. A separate one keeps this apart from the rest of your life.
  2. Have your password manager open to create a long, unique password.
  3. Put a little bitcoin in your Lightning wallet: 60 USD for the plan plus a small first top-up, for example 20–50 USD.
Step 05/ 10

  3. Enter your email and a new password.
  4. There is a Referral code box. Type freedomfew. It should show as valid. When we checked, it also gave you one free month.

No ID, selfie or phone number is needed for the standard card.

Step 06/ 10

Pay for the plan

  1. Pick the plan. When we checked, the only plan on sale was Founder, at 60 USD per year. HODL and MOON were marked “Soon”.
  2. Choose to pay with bitcoin over Lightning.
  3. Scan the payment code with your Lightning wallet and confirm.
  4. Wait for the page to show the plan as active.

Lightning A fast way to send bitcoin. Payments usually arrive in seconds for a tiny fee.

Step 07/ 10

Create your card

  1. Create your virtual card in the app. It appears right away.
  2. The name on the card is mostly only seen inside Freedomia.
  3. Set a card PIN in the Card section. You confirm it with a code sent by email.
  4. Set low daily and weekly limits in the card limits section. You can raise them later.
Step 08/ 10

Top up with Lightning

  1. Open the top-up options in your account.
  2. Choose Lightning. Your card has its own Lightning Address that you can pay to.
  3. Start with a small amount, for example 20 USD worth.
  4. Check that the balance shows up in US dollars before you top up more.

Send only what the app shows. Sending on the wrong network can lose the money or cost a recovery fee and weeks of waiting. Copy the address or code from the app every time.

Step 09/ 10

Pay with it

  1. Online: enter the card details. Many shops then ask for a code (3D Secure). It arrives by email or SMS.
  2. In shops, Android: add the card to Google Wallet by typing in its details. Then tap your phone to pay.
  3. iPhone: online payments work. Apple Pay does not.

Google Wallet does not run on a GrapheneOS phone. Online payments still work there.

Step 10/ 10

Stay safe

  1. Think the card number leaked? Freeze the card in the app, then ask for a new number.
  2. Freedomia will never ask for your full card number, CVV, password or codes. Anyone who does is a scammer.
  3. Refunds can take up to 30 working days. Getting money back through Visa is hard: it needs your ID and costs 250 USD.
  4. The plan lasts 12 months. Automatic renewal is on by default: a day before the end, it takes the yearly price from that card’s balance. You can turn it off under Settings → Membership.
  5. If the plan ends, the card is frozen. After 30 more days, the card, the account and any balance left are deleted.
  6. Keep savings in your own wallet, not on the card.
